These are the voices of conservatives who believe the rule of law in this country is more important than protecting one person–even a president.
Donald Trump has already been convicted of state crimes he committed before he was president. Now Trump and his lawyers are arguing in front of the U.S. Supreme Court that presidents have total immunity from criminal prosecution for illegal acts while in office. Not only would that protect Trump from further legal accountability for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election, but it would set an extremely dangerous precedent that all future presidents could exploit to place themselves above the law. As Trump’s own lawyers have argued in court, the potential implications of this ruling could allow the commander-in-chief to order the assassinations of political rivals.
It’s more important than ever for the nation’s highest court to uphold the rule of law and ensure that presidential power and ambition are constrained by criminal legal accountability. Trump has already laid out a dangerous vision of executive power—from illegally deploying the military against civilians to using the powers of the state against his enemies. The Supreme Court must uphold our system of checks and balances so that Trump and all future presidents are accountable under the law.
Our democracy can only flourish if everyone is equal under the law.
If you are a Republican, former Republican, or conservative who believes it is essential to ensure that the American president is NOT above the law, we want to hear from you.
